How to Report Fraud and Scams in Ghana

Reporting a scam protects you and prevents the same fraudster from victimising others. Here are every official channel you should use in Ghana.

Why Reporting Matters

Many fraud victims never report what happened to them — out of shame, resignation, or not knowing where to go. This silence benefits fraudsters enormously. Reporting serves two purposes: it may lead to investigation and recovery, and it creates a paper trail that helps authorities identify patterns and repeat offenders.

Even if you cannot recover your money, your report could stop the same person from stealing from someone else.

Ghana Police Service — Cybercrime Unit

The Ghana Police Service has a dedicated Cybercrime Unit that handles online fraud, mobile money scams, and digital financial crimes.

Visit your nearest police station and file an official report. Bring all evidence: transaction IDs, call logs, screenshots of conversations, and any documents received from the fraudster.

Bank of Ghana — Financial Fraud

For fraud involving banks, microfinance institutions, forex bureaus, or mobile money operators, report to the Bank of Ghana.

The Bank of Ghana's Consumer and Financial Literacy Department handles complaints and can escalate matters to licensed institutions.

Securities and Exchange Commission — Investment Fraud

Report Ponzi schemes, pyramid schemes, and unlicensed investment operators to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Ghana.

You can also verify whether an investment firm is licensed on the SEC website at sec.gov.gh.

Your Telecom Provider — Mobile Money Fraud

For mobile money fraud, contact your provider's fraud line immediately. Time is critical — the sooner you report, the better the chance of tracing or freezing the funds.
